Audi to go all-electric in 10 to 15 years, as per the reports
KUALA LUMPUR: A number of automakers have already announced their plans to go fully electric in the decade or so, and now one more name is likely to be added to the list, and that is Audi. According to a recent report by WirtschaftsWoche, the German automaker is set to phase out internal combustion engines and will go fully electric in the next 10 to 15 years.
The company’s CEO Markus Duesmann told the publication its transition plans while stating that “protection of the environment and economic success go together well.” As of now, there are no specific target dates, but the company is developing the transition timeline and is expected to make an official announcement in the coming months. The upcoming plan would also reveal the names of Audi facilities that will switch from ICE to EV.
The mentioned 10- to 15-year switch is an estimated time, it may take a period of two decades, even if the company prepares to roll out a number of new electric cars by the middle of this decade.
If we talk about the current EV portfolio of Audi, the company offers 17 electric cars around the globe, which include five EVs, and 12 plug-in hybrid models. By the middle of the running decade, this number is expected to become 30 with around 20 fully-electric models.
The automaker’s increasing focus on electric vehicles firstly highlighted in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal happened in 2015 when it found that its diesel mills were cheating emissions tests. Along with that, the increasing ban on internal combustion engines in more and more countries moved Audi to follow the steps of other luxury automakers like Bentley and Volvo.
