Audi brings Matrix OLED - Technology from future
Kuala Lumpur: Audi is all set to bring a new advancement in automotive lighting technology at the Frankfurt Motor Show better known as International Automobile Ausstellung (IAA). This technology known as 'OLED' can be called off as a better version of LED where the letter O stands for 'Organic' while LED is the obvious 'light emitting diode'. This is not the first time we have seen Audi focusing on lighting technology, earlier also it showcased the matrix LED technology in the year of 2013.
Each OLED unit has two electrodes, out of which at-least one should be transparent, having numerous thin layers of organic semiconductor materials. A low voltage ranging from three to four volts activates these thin layers which are less than one-thousandth of a millimeter thick and are capable of emitting different colours based on the molecular composition of light source. Unlike LEDs which are point light sources, the OLEDs are flat light sources.
Apart from the fact that these are organic, there are many other benefits that it brings with itself. It does not cast shadows, emits very little heat and do not require reflectors, light guides or any similar optical components. OLEDs can be subdivided into small segments that can be formed into different shapes and colours and hence opens up new possibilities for car designers. It is not only efficient, lightweight and maintenance free but also hardly needs any cooling.
To encase this organic material, compact plastic films would be used instead of the traditional glass sheets. With the progress of this technology, Audi would not limit it only to the headlamps, but the tail lights and turn indicators would also be inheriting it. Though the company has revealed everything about the technology, but we will have to wait a little longer to find out that which car would be the first to be blessed with it.
