All-new 2024 GAC GS3 coming to Malaysia; here’s what to expect
Last year in May, the Chinese automaker GAC Motor announced its plan to locally assemble cars in Malaysia in partnership with WTC Automotif (WTCA), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Warisan TC Holdings (Tan Chong Group). It is a significant move for the automaker as it marks its first-ever Completely Knocked Down (CKD) project outside of China.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will the next-gen GAC GS3 launch in Malaysia?
The GAC GS3 is expected to launch in Malaysia in the middle of this year. What can we expect from the upcoming GAC GS3?
The upcoming GAC GS3 is expected to come with a sci-fi inspired exterior, a contemporary interior with advanced technology features, and a more powerful 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. The first local fruit of this collaboration is the next-gen GAC GS3 (aka GS3 Emzoom), which should not be confused with the GS3 model introduced locally in 2021. The upcoming version is vastly different from it both in terms of design and mechanicals. So, let’s talk about what the new GAC GS3 would bring to the table.
Dimensions
Based on the company’s latest GPMA platform, the upcoming GS3 measures 4,410 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. Compared to the existing model, it is 52 mm longer and 25 mm wider and spans a 90 mm longer wheelbase. The boot capacity is measured at 341 litres, expandable up to 1271 litres.
Exterior
The 2024 GS3 features a sci-fi-inspired exterior with lots of geometric shapes and textures. It has a commanding and iconic h-shape front face incorporating a flying wing grille and laser eye LED headlights. The side profile is accentuated by electric hidden door handles and stylish 19-inch wheels. Towards the rear lie “Light Dart” tail lights that have 66 embedded LED bulbs, setting them apart from the ordinary. These lights create a stunning 3D effect, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
Interior
With a modern and minimalist approach, the interior of the new GAC GS3 fulfils all the requirements of contemporary design. It incorporates a horizontal layout with a flat-bottom steering wheel, a crystal shift gear knob, and a high centre console. The local-spec model is expected to get the following features -
- 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen
- Digital speedometer
- Wireless charging tray for smartphones
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
- Power-adjustable front seats
- Adaptive cruise control
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Lane keep assist
- Lane departure warning
- Forward collision warning
- High beam assist
- Traffic sign recognition
- Traffic jam assist
Engine
Under the hood, the new GAC GS3 will have a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-pot engine, which delivers a maximum power of 177 PS at 5500 rpm and a peak torque of 270 Nm between 1400-4500 rpm. Compared to the ongoing model powered by a 1.5-litre NA mill, the output sees a bump of 63 PS and 120 Nm. The turbo mill is linked to a seven-speed DCT, sending power to the front wheels. It enables the SUV to accelerate from zero to 100 kmph in 7.5 seconds.
Price and availability
The GAC GS3 price may go up from the existing tag of RM 96,300 on account of upgraded design, advanced features, and a more potent mechanical setup. However, it is expected to stay competitive in its category, particularly against major rivals like the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V.
As far as the availability is concerned, the CKD production of the next-gen GAC GS3 is scheduled to commence in April 2024 with deliveries expected to begin in the middle of the year.
