All-new 2021 Honda HR-V hybrid SUV introduced
KUALA LUMPUR: As promised, the third-gen Honda HR-V has been finally unveiled after a lot of teasers and spy shots. So, no conventional petrol or diesel units, only a two-motor e:HEV hybrid system is offered as a standard fitment. The new HR-V with e:HEV system is part of the automaker’s electrification commitment that applies to all its mainstream models.
Thanks to the new hybrid mill, the 3rd-gen HR-V offers better efficiency. In addition, the car now benefits from updated technology and safety features. Not to forget, its design language is improved too.
Speaking of design, the all-new HR-V draws inspiration from the brand’s e-Concept all-electric prototype that was showcased last year. At the front, the car features an elongated bonnet and a new integrated grille. Also, the more vertical body sides ensure that there is no impact on the car’s interior space.
2021 Honda HR-V design elements -
- Sleek LED headlamps with LED DRLs
- Prominent grille with two design options
- Skid plate
- Wide set fog lamps
- Flat roof and bonnet
- Sharply raked C-pillar
- Prominent shoulder lines
- New taillights with LED light bar
- Faux rear skid plate
Honda claims that the HR-Vs coupe-inspired styling has not affected its practicality. Thanks to the clever packaging of the e:HEV hybrid system tech it can comfortably sit in four adults.
As for the 2021 HR-V under the hood configuration, the company has not revealed any information. However, we expect the HR-V to feature the same e:HEV set-up as seen in the Jazz supermini. If so is the case, then a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol mill will be combined with two electric motors. In the Jazz, the said combination pumps out a maximum power of 108 bhp, however, in the larger HR-V the setup could generate more power.
Off the two electric motors, only one will propel the HR-V directly and that’s the propulsion motor. The second motor is paired with the petrol engine and acts as a generator to charge the car’s lithium-ion battery. As for the 1.5-litre mill, it sends drive to the front wheels via a CVT automatic transmission.
On the inside, the 3rd-gen HR-V offers a tad bit more practicality compared to a supermini or family hatchback. It gets Honda’s versatile Magic seats - a second-row feature that gives the driver/passengers the ability to configure the cabin to maximize cargo room, storage space, and comfort.
