A new sports car from Lotus coming soon
KUALA LUMPUR: The year 2021 is going amazingly well for the auto industry, each segment is on the receiving end of a new, better, and updated creation. For instance, there is the upcoming Honda HR-V, Thai launched BMW 5 Series and locally arrived new Kia Seltos & 2021 Toyota Yaris. What was missing here was a sports car and now that void will be soon filled by Lotus.
As per a report by Automotive News Europe, a new Lotus sports car is scheduled to arrive by mid-2021 and will help the company widen its appeal globally.
In the interview with the publication, Phil Popham, Lotus CEO, commented that the coming sports car is essential for the company's substantial growth. In 2020, Lotus witnessed a 4.4 percent growth in sales compared to the last year.
What info do we have about Lotus' upcoming sports car?
Engine details -
A combustion engine is said to power the sports car, however, will it be a plug-in-hybrid model or not is still unknown.
Production -
The unnamed Lotus model will be produced at the automaker's Hethel facility. The manufacturing will begin next year and it is said that the upcoming Lotus vehicle will be offered in several trim levels.
It was only in October last year that Lotus upgraded its Hethel headquarters that included an all-new electric drive unit test cell, revamped 3.54 km test track, new assembly hall, and addition of a new factory.
Design -
The Lotus sports car is expected to feature a stunning design language like the rest of its siblings. On the inside, however, it will feature a spacious cabin making it suitable for daily use.
Variants and price -
There's no exact information available on the upcoming Lotus sports car. However, as mentioned earlier, it will be offered in several versions, and its price will go from 55,000 British pounds (approx. RM 305,038) to 105,000 pounds (RM 582,346).
Sales commencement -
The Lotus sports car will broaden the horizon for the automaker and it is said that the vehicle will also go on sale in the US market where the company is currently selling only one car, the Evora.
Given the car's wide price range, the new Lotus car will replace the automaker's entire lineup, including the two-decade-old Exige and Elise and the 12-year old Evora.
