2024 Toyota Tacoma makes its world debut in Hawaii; check out its key details

KUALA LUMPUR: The Toyota Tacoma is popular as the brand’s best-selling mid-size pickup for the past 18 years and now the automaker has introduced its fourth generation model. Yes, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma made its global debut last week in Hawaii and here we are discussing it in detail.

At the Tacoma’s premier was present Toyota group vice president and general manager Dave Christ along with the pickup’s chief engineer Sheldon Brown and CALTY president Kevin Hunter. Here Christ said, “With even more off-road capability and the quality, durability, and reliability that our customers expect along with a host of options for every owner, we’re confident that Tacoma will remain the top choice for mid-size pickup buyers when it arrives later this year.”

2024 Toyota Tacoma: Key details

Platform

The all-new Tacoma is built on the automaker’s global truck platform known as TNGA-F which it shares with the Sequoia and Tundra. In its new form, the vehicle features a new high-strength boxed and a steel ladder frame.

Design

Kevin Hunter, president, of CALTY Design Research on Tacoma’s design detailing said, “Our primary design goal for the all-new Tacoma was to be authentic to the way our customers use their trucks for rugged outdoor fun.”

He further explained, “We looked at our truck DNA and the Toyota Baja race trucks for inspiration to capture the extreme spirit of off-road adventure. High lift, big tires, slim body, and a powerful athletic stance define the iconic Tacoma look, referred to as ‘Tacoma-ness’.”

Some of the inclusions include a wide upper grille, aggressive skid plates, high-mount headlamps, side functional air intakes, hexagonal grille motif, and integrated roof and tailgate spoilers.

Suspension setup

Each grade of Tacoma comes with specific suspensions. For instance,

• TRD Sport gets red TRD sport-tuned shocks
• TRD Off-Road grade is equipped with monotube Bilstein remote reservoir shocks
• TRD PRO is fitted with FOX’s new QS3 three-way adjustable internal bypass shocks with remote reservoirs
• Trailhunter gets new Old Man Emu (OME) 4×4 Suspension by ARB
• Limited grade trim features a new Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system

Powertrain

The Toyota Tacoma is offered in two powertrain options, both utilizing a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit.

The said engine in the base SR grades generates a max power of 228 hp along with a peak torque of 329 Nm. In all the other trim options, the output hikes to 278 hp and 429 Nm.

 

As for the hybrid models, the 2.4-litre mill is paired with a 48-hp electric motor that feeds off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack. The total system output reads 326 hp and 630 Nm.

Off-road capability

The all-new Tacoma is the ultimate adventure machine that takes off-road capability to the next level. So, the key inclusions in the area are -

• All-new front stabilizer bar
• 33.8-degree approach, 23.5-degree breakover, and 25.7-degree departure angles
• Ground clearance maxes out at 11 inches (on TRD Pro)
• Tons of cameras to view potential obstacles
• Standard front and optional rear recovery hooks

• New, significantly quieter CRAWL Control function
• Electronically activated locking rear differential

Cabin inclusions

The all-new Tacoma is loaded with the latest technology and information displays that bring significant updates to vehicles. Part of the setup is -

• A new 8-inch or available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen
• Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system
• Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output.
• A USB-C data and charging port, dual USB-C charging ports in the front row and for rear passengers
• A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with four different styles
• A 7-inch gauge cluster is standard (on lower grades)
• Smart Key System with push-button start

Safety

All Tacoma models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 which is the brand’s suite of active safety and convenience systems. The suite includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Pro Active Driving Assist.
