2024 Honda Freed MPV debuts in Japan with a hybrid powertrain
KUALA LUMPUR: Way back in 2010, Honda introduced the Freed compact MPV in Malaysia but discontinued it after a few years due to low demand. While the MPV faced challenges in the local market, it has proven to be a success in Japan. As a result, Honda recently revealed the third-generation Freed in the Land of Rising Sun.

Honda Japan will offer the new Freed in two powertrain options - a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and an e:HEV hybrid setup combining a 1.5-litre petrol unit and two electric motors.The new Honda Freed is a completely overhauled model and looks more striking than its predecessor. It comes in two versions - Air and Crosstar. The Freed Air has a simple and practical appearance with horizontal lines and a large glasshouse while the Freed Crosstar sports a more rugged look with a distinct grille and bumper designs, unique alloy wheels, faux brushed aluminium inserts, fender extensions, and roof rails.
Dimensionally, the next-gen Honda Freed measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,755 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,740 mm. Compared to its predecessor, the MPV is 45 mm longer while the rest of the dimensions remain unchanged.
Inside the new Honda Freed, we can see a familiar six-seater configuration with a flip-up third-row. An exclusive five-seater (two-row) configuration is also available with the Freed Crosstar, offering more boot space.
In terms of features, the vehicle gets a large free-standing infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster for the driver, and stain and scratch-resistant seat upholstery.
Coming to the mechanical bits, Honda Japan will offer the new Freed in two powertrain options - petrol and petrol hybrid. While the full details regarding these mills are yet to be revealed, the automaker has confirmed that the entry-level model will come equipped with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder unit paired with a CVT while the top-spec version will get the brand’s e:HEV hybrid technology combining a 1.5-litre gasoline mill and two electric motors.
The all-new 2024 Honda Freed launch in Japan is scheduled for June 2024.
