2023 Proton X90: What to expect?

KUALA LUMPUR: With more than 11,509 units sold so far (till May) in 2022, the X50 is the best-selling Proton SUV, which also enjoys the top position in the B-segment SUV category in Malaysia. On the other hand, we have the X70, which also leads the C-segment category with a total of 6,460 deliveries. Well, after the success of these models, Proton is ready to roll out one more SUV that is likely to be called the X90. Here’s what we expect from the upcoming 2023 Proton X90.

• Proton’s upcoming SUV will be a three-row SUV and it will lock horns with the Mazda CX-8 and the Kia Carnival.
• The X90 will be based on the Geely Haoyue underpinning Geely’s CV platform, which was introduced with the Jiaji.
• Just like the platform, the Proton’s SUV is also expected to borrow a powertrain setup from the Chinese model. That’s a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivering a maximum power of 181 PS and a peak torque of 300 Nm. The power is transferred to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. However, it might get a 190 PS/300 Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder mill, which is offered with the model in the Philippines and the Middle East.

• Equipment-wise, it may feature advanced bits like dual 12.3-inch displays for the entertainment and instrument cluster, head-up display, air purification system, three-zone climate control, power-adjustable seats, advanced driver-assistance gears, and more.

• The SUV is already under testing in Malaysia and was recently snapped by the fans on Genting Highlands. The X90 fan page is also running on Facebook. All these hints at the soon arrival of this large Proton SUV in Malaysia.
