KUALA LUMPUR: After terminating its association with Peugeot and Citroen in the European market, Toyota has rebranded its smallest car offering in the continent, the Toyota Aygo. To be called Toyota Aygo X, the ‘X’ suffix in the new version of the car brings along some rugged design elements, which adds to a visual appeal to the crossover.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How is the new Toyota Aygo X different from the standard Aygo?
The new Toyota Aygo X has bigger dimensions, more rugged exterior elements, and a funky cabin as compared to the standard Aygo. What powers the new Toyota Aygo X?
The new Toyota Aygo X is powered by a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine making 72 bhp of maximum power and 93 Nm of peak torque. On the outside, the new Toyota Aygo X looks tough and rugged than before with chunky-looking black plastic moulding over the wheel arches and 11 mm more ground clearance. The other design highlights which make the new Aygo X more youthful than before are 18-inch matte black alloy wheels with contrast orange accents, retractable fabric roof, and full LED headlamps.
The funkiness of the exterior of the Toyota Aygo X has been carried forward in the cabin as well. The new compact car gets a unique design for the dashboard with vibrant coloured accents, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay and over-the-air updates, ambient lighting, and wireless charging. The list of standard safety features is comprehensive as well, with inclusions like night pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, daytime cyclist detection, and lane trace assist.
With a length of 3,700 mm, the new Toyota Aygo X is 235 mm longer than the regular Aygo, thus making it considerably bigger than the latter. The increased wheelbase by 90 mm, increased the width by 125 mm and increased height by 65 mm also suggest that the Aygo X will have more cabin room than the regular Aygo. Even the boot space has gone up to 269 litres, which can go further till 829 litres after folding down the rear seats. However, the rear passengers still don’t get the convenience of rolling down the windows.
Despite the increase in size, dimensions, and visual appeal, the Toyota Aygo X continues to be an entry-level compact car with an equally small engine option. The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine of the Aygo X makes 72 bhp at 6,000 rpm of maximum power and 93 Nm at 4,400 rpm of maximum torque outputs. The transmission options on offer for the compact city car are a 5-speed manual and a CVT. The engine propels the car from 0 to 100 kmph in a rather slow 15.6 seconds, with the top speed rated at 158 kmph.
