2022 Mazda MX-30: What to expect?

The official distributor of Mazda cars in Malaysia, Bermaz Auto, recently teased the two upcoming models on its social media handle. One of them can be clearly identified as the BT-50 pickup truck while the other is expected to be the MX-30. The long-awaited Mazda MX-30 electric car was supposed to enter the local market more than a year ago, which could not happen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Well, now it seems the model is about to hit the local shores. So, here is what we expect from the Malaysian-spec MX-30 taking reference from the Australian market.

2022 Mazda MX-30 Powertrain

Mazda offers the Mazda MX-30 in two powertrains - mild hybrid and fully electric. The former is equipped with an e-SkyActiv G powertrain, comprising a 2.0-litre four-popper gasoline engine and a 24-volt M Hybrid system generating a maximum power output of 155 PS and a peak torque of 200 Nm. As for the transmission, the engine is coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The MX-30 fully-electric model gets an electric motor with a power output of 145 PS and 271 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a single-speed reduction gearbox driving the front wheels of the electric car.  Also part of the kit is the enhanced version of the brand’s G-Vectoring engineControl system, called e-GVC Plus.

Mazda Malaysia seems to introduce the car in pure-electric form, considering the recently announced tax rebates on buying electric cars in the country.

2022 Mazda MX-30 Range and charging

If we talk about the Mazda MX-30 range, the automaker claims a figure of 224 km on a single charge. For that, the EV supports AC as well as DC charging. Using a 6.6 kW AC charger via a Type 2 port, it takes three hours to get charged from 20-80%. However, one can charge EV in just 36 minutes with the help of a 50 kW DC charger and a CCS port. In this reference, Bermaz Auto is said, “to have identified private charging operators to collaborate with on EV charging infrastructure.”

Sharing the size with the CX-30, the MX-30 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width, 1,570 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,655 mm. Exterior highlights include adaptive LED headlamps, a long bonnet, a coupe-esque roofline, suicide doors, LED circular tail lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels with black body cladding. On the pure EV, there are no exhaust outlets.

Inside, the EV is likely to get a floating centre console with an 8.8-inch infotainment system. The head unit is expected to pair with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. Other expected specifications are single-zone climate control, auxiliary power outlets, a seven-inch TFT LCD multi-info display, powered front seats, ambient lighting, Active Driving Display, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, and a heated steering wheel.

On the safety front, Mazda is likely to pack the Malaysian-spec EV with many safety and driver-assist systems such as -

It is to be noted that the Mazda MX-30 has achieved an overall 5-star rating under the 2020 Euro NCAP crash tests.

2022 Mazda MX-30 Price

Mazda has not yet dropped any hint about the 2022 MX-30 price. In the Australian market, the Japanese automaker offers the electric car at a starting price of AUD 65,490 (approximately equal to RM 198,127) before on-the-road costs.
