2022 Mazda CX-5 revealed with cosmetic and mechanical tweaks
KUALA LUMPUR: A few days back, we saw the Chinese-spec Mazda CX-5 facelift reportedly leaked by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Well, that was an unofficial debut, and now here comes the official one destined for the US market. Mazda has just introduced the facelifted 2022 CX-5 for the country with refreshed styling and standard AWD. Let’s know the changes in detail.
In terms of exterior design, the new Mazda CX-5 looks the same at first glance, however, if we check out closely a number of updates can be noticed. Mazda spruced up the already attractive bodywork of the crossover SUV by making the front grille more prominent with a new textured mesh pattern and the wings that extend outwards. Each lamp of headlights and tail lights now feature a pair of horizontally spaced, rectangular LED lights for a sleek and eye-catching expression.
Included in the visual evolution are a smoother lower front fascia and a new pair of aluminum alloy wheels. A new Zircon Sand exterior shade is also added to the color palette.
Mazda offers different trim levels with visual touches inside and out. The mid-range trims feature gloss black finishing on lower body claddings, signature wing, door mirrors, and 19-inch rims. Inside the cabin, red accents and contrast stitching differentiate the look.
Meanwhile, the top-spec 2.5 Turbo Signature trim gets colour-coded body claddings with 19-inch wheels finished in bright gloss silver. The interior looks premium with quality Nappa leather and genuine wood grain trimmings.
The standard interior updates include wireless Qi phone charging, Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive), redesigned seats, and Cruising & Traffic Support added to the i-Activsense system.
On the mechanical front, Mazda no longer offers the CX-5 with FWD rather all the trims are mated to Mazda's i-Activ all-wheel-drive system. The SUV gets the power either from a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline four-cylinder engine or a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-pot. The former churns out a maximum power output of 190 PS and 252 Nm of peak torque while the latter is good for making 254 PS and 434 Nm. As for the transmission, a six-speed AT is available, which according to Mazda gives better performance.
Mazda also tried to enhance the vehicle’s ride comfort by updating the suspension and chassis, which greatly reduces road noise “particularly when driving on rough surfaces”.
The updated Mazda CX-5 is expected to hit the US showrooms later this year.
