2022 Honda BR-V: What to expect?

The MPV market in Malaysia is getting hotter with the recently launched all-new Perodua Alza and the soon-to-arrive Toyota Veloz, which is likely to be joined by the next-gen Honda BR-V later this year. Yes, after rolling out the new HR-V, Honda Malaysia’s next model on the list is expected to be the all-new BR-V.  

However, there is no official word on its local arrival yet, but the bookings for the revamped model are now underway in Thailand, after hitting Indonesia showrooms last November. So, while taking the hints from the new BR-V on offer in neighbouring markets, here’s what we can expect from the next-gen Malaysia-spec BR-V.

A larger footprint

Based on the N7X Concept previewed in May 2021, the new BR-V occupies a larger footprint. It measures 4,490 mm in length, 1,780 mm in width, 1,685 mm in height, and has a 2,695 mm wheelbase. In comparison to the previous generation, the new MPV is 33 mm longer and 45 mm wider, however, its height and wheelbase are slightly reduced by 8 mm and 13 mm, respectively.

A more refined look

When it comes to design, the new BR-V looks more refined and rugged than its predecessor. Up front, we can see a large slatted grille with the brand’s signature “Solid Wing Face” chrome bar leading to the restyled slim headlights. The latter comes integrated with the reflector LED tech and inverted L-shaped DRLs. 

More revisions can be observed in the form of a downturned centre air intake teamed up with a silver skid plate and fog lights housed in L-shaped frames. Towards the rear lies the redesigned trapezoidal LED tail lights. The upgraded exterior kit may also include new 17-inch wheels (16-inch as standard), chrome outer door handles, power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and a walk-away auto lock.

Upmarket cabin

On the inside, the all-new BR-V will have a far-reaching redesign that seems to be inspired by the Honda Amaze available in the Indian market. However, a few resemblances can also be spotted with the bigger CR-V. Some of the highlights include a large floating gloss black display panel, high-mounted centre air vents, a stitched panel on the front passenger side, and all-black combination leather upholstery.

The upgraded MPV is likely to be equipped with the following tech features - 

• 7.0-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
• 4.2-inch multi-info instrument cluster display
• Automatic air-conditioning system with rear vents
• Multi-function leather steering wheel
• Remote engine start
• keyless entry and start with Honda Smart Key
• Four speakers
• Illuminated vanity mirror
• Power sockets for all rows

Updated mechanical setup

Under the hood, the all-new 2022 Honda BR-V will have an updated 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol unit housing new double overhead cams. The engine kicks out a maximum power output of 121 PS at 6,600 rpm and a peak torque of 145 Nm at 4,300. Compared to the existing model, the output has increased by merely 1 PS.

As for transmitting the power to the front wheels, the engine will be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT, depending on the variant.

Improved safety

While the ongoing BR-V comes with just 2 airbags, the second-gen model is expected to be equipped with a total of 6 airbags as standard. The standard safety kit may also have a full suite of Honda Sensing advanced driving assistance systems with LaneWatch blind spot mitigating cameras. The former comprises the following gears -

• Collision Mitigation Braking System
• Lane Keeping Assist System
• Road Departure Mitigation System
• Lane Departure Warning
• Auto High-Beam
• Adaptive Cruise Control 
• Lead Car Departure Notification System

The passive safety kit will continue to feature an anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, hill start assist, traction control system and vehicle stability assist.

Higher price

Honda Malaysia offers the current BR-V at a price ranging between RM 90,700 to RM 97,700. This will surely go up on account of the refined looks and advanced features factored in.
