Meet Ford’s first electric commercial vehicle, the E-Transit

KUALA LUMPUR: After unveiling the electric Mustang Mach-E and announcing the electric F-150, here Ford introduces the 2022 E-Transit, the eco-friendly version of the world’s best-selling cargo van. It features a perfect blend of next-level connected vehicle technology and Built Ford Tough capability. 

The 2022 Ford E-Transit will offer a choice of eight configurations, including three roof heights, three lengths, one chassis cab, and one cutaway model. All will have an all-electric rear-wheel drivetrain. The maximum payload of the electric van will be 3,800 pounds, except for the cutaway variant that would have a carrying capacity of 4,290 pounds.

Talking about the mechanical numbers, the E-Transit’s electric motor targets to produce 266 hp and 430 Nm of peak torque. The battery pack has a capacity of 67kWh, which according to Ford is enough to bring a driving range of 126 miles for the low-roof variant. 

“This makes E-Transit ideal for commercial customers who know their drive routes and often work in urban environments,” said Ted Cannis, Ford North America general manager of commercial business. Ford has not developed this van as a cross-country workhorse.

The upcoming E-Transit will support AC as well as DC fast charging. With just 15 minutes of charging on a 115-plus-kilowatt DC fast charger, it can get an estimated 45 miles of range. For 15-80% charging, it takes 34 minutes. But if customers charge the van with 50 kW, the 80% mark comes in 65 minutes. 

For the zero-emissions iteration, the automaker placed the batteries under the floor, thus it carries the same interior cargo dimensions as the combustion-powered models. 

In terms of advanced technology, the 2022 Ford E-Transit gets:

• Ford Data Services
• 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
• Ford's SYNC 4 infotainment suite featuring a 12-inch touchscreen display with cloud-enhanced navigation, smartphone integration, and over-the-air updates.
• Ford's Co-Pilot 360 safety technologies, including lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, speed sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, and more.

The cargo van will also have an optional Pro Power Onboard mobile generator, allowing owners to recharge tools, or other items while working.

The 2022 Ford E-Transit is slated to hit the US showrooms in late 2021 at a price starting from the US $45,000 (RM 186,030).
