2021 Volkswagen Golf MK8 now available in Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR: With a more attention-grabbing appeal, outstanding features, and improved performance, the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf enters the Singapore market after a long wait. The new version of the iconic Volkswagen hatchback is now available in two variants - Golf Mild Hybrid 1.5 eTSI (with three equipment packages viz. Life, Life Plus, and R-Line) and Golf GTI.

The price for the base trim with the Life equipment pack starts at SGD 125,900 (RM 391,348), while the top-spec GTI costs SGD 205,900 (RM 639,995) to Singaporeans. The mentioned prices are after SGD 15,000 Vehicle Emissions Scheme rebate.

So, what all is on offer? Starting with the exterior design, the new Golf continues to feature the same body lines around modern enhancements like LED headlights, which are now standard across the range. The Life pack features 17-inch wheels, whereas the other two get 18-inch units with a variant-specific design. On the contrary, the sportier GTI rolls on larger 19-inch Adelaide wheels.

Moving in, here the Golf’s well-equipped cabin boasts a high quality and ambiance. All trims have digital touch-sensitive buttons and touchpads for different control panels, including the climate and lighting. As for infotainment, the Life and Life Plus packs get an 8.25-inch Composition unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, while the R-Line and GTI models host a bigger 10.25-inch Discover Pro system. The latter also supports wireless smartphone connectivity.

Other high-end features available with the Golf GTI are a head-up display, sunroof, leather upholstery, and DCC adaptive suspension. However, a 10.25 Digital Cockpit Pro, Air Care climatronic with an allergen filter, keyless entry and push start, and electric parking brake are included in the standard kit.

Under the bonnet, the regular Golf gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that replaces the older 1.4 litre unit. Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission system, the new mill generates a maximum power output of 150 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm. This enables the hatchback to run from naught to 100 kmph in 8.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 224 kmph. Active Cylinder Management is one of the significant features of the new powertrain that results in better fuel economy and emissions.

On the other hand, the new Golf GTI gets its power from a 2.0L turbo-four that is good for making 245 PS and 370 Nm. This means a bump of 15 PS and 20 Nm in comparison to the outgoing model.

Well, that was all about the new Singapore-spec Volkswagen Golf which is now available for sale at showrooms. About its arrival in the local market, the automaker has not yet revealed any information.
