2021 Toyota Prius 2020 Edition marks the 20th anniversary of the model
KUALA LUMPUR: It's been 20 years since Toyota launched its eco-friendly Prius, which has become the talking point of eco-conscious people around the world. Since its debut in 2000, more than 6 million Prius units have been sold globally, which shows that people are willing to spend more on driving a car they feel good about. To commemorate this milestone, the Japanese automaker has announced a special-edition Toyota Prius. It will be called Prius 2020 Edition, and production will be limited to 2,020 units.
Based on the top-spec XLE FWD model, the Prius 2020 will be offered in either Wind Chill Pearl or Supersonic Red colour. Toyota dressed up the exterior with black trim, including the B-pillars and mirror caps. There are a body-color rear spoiler and 17-inch wheels with five, thick black spokes.
Inside the cabin, the special edition Prius features black trim on the shift knob and A-pillar, smoked finish on the HVAC vents, and a special 2020 emblem on the key fob and floor mats. The features like the heated steering wheel and heated eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat already come as standard with the XLE trim, however, the new version gets Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay functionality.
The mechanical setup of Prius 2020 will be the same as the ongoing model. It will continue to return 52 mpg in the city, 50 mpg on the highway, and 52 mpg combined.
For safety, the 2021 Prius is upgraded with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 driver assistance system. It includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, pre-collision braking with low-light pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, rear cross-traffic alert, bicyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane departure alert, and road sign assist.
The information about the price and availability is yet to come. However, the 2020 Toyota Prius XLE price starts at $28,250 (RM 122,491), so we can expect a little higher price on account of new enhancements.
The automaker will unveil the 2020 Edition on May 18 at 11:00 AM EDT through live streaming. During the event, it will also introduce two all-new hybrid models.
