2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross debuts, plug-in hybrid version next year

KUALA LUMPUR: A few months back, Mitsubishi announced its intent of updating the entire vehicle lineup in the US market by the second quarter of 2021. In line with that plan, the automaker today unveiled the redesigned  Eclipse Cross, a small SUV that partially holds the legacy of the Eclipse coupe. It now features a sleek, sporty appearance and better driving comfort. 

The new Eclipse Cross received cosmetic surgery as it boasts a “radically changed front and rear design,” inspired by the e-Evolution bold electric SUV concept introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2017.

Upfront, the noticeable design changes include an evolved version of the brand's signature Dynamic Shield design concept, a new front bumper guard, and a restyled light layout. Significant functional updates found at the rear are a redesigned hatch and rear window that lend a more sophisticated appearance to the SUV along with better rear visibility. The tail lights feature a wide three-dimensional design while the new tailgate flaunts a sharply sculpted hexagon pattern, blending the elegance with ruggedness.

Inside the 2021 Eclipse Cross, a new black interior is paired with silver accents and light grey leather seats creating a sophisticated look. The door trims also match the colour of the seats. To make customers experience more enjoyable, the automaker brings a new 8-inch smartphone-link display audio system as standard. It is positioned close to the driver and front passenger for a better view of the information as well as easier operation.  For fast reference, the system now comes with tactile volume and turning knobs.

Powering the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the same 1.5-litre four-pot turbo petrol engine generating 150 PS of maximum power and 250 Nm of peak torque, mated to a CVT automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. Mitsubishi will also bring in a plug-in hybrid powertrain in late 2021, featuring a 2.4-litre non-turbo petrol mill paired with electric motors. However, the details on this are scarce, it is likely to borrow drivetrain from the upcoming Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

“Besides the contemporary exterior and comfortable and smart interior, MITSUBISHI MOTORS' legendary Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system ensures that drivers are always in control for their next adventure,” said Minoru Uehara, chief product specialist of MMC.

Mitsubishi will launch the 2021 Eclipse Cross next month in Australia and New Zealand, while the US launch is slated for the first quarter of 2021.
