2021 Isuzu D-Max scores 5-star safety rating

KUALA LUMPUR: The Australian New Car Assessment Program, commonly known as ANCAP, has awarded the 2021 Isuzu D-Max five-star safety rating. The new D-Max was the first car to undergo the programme's stricter criteria. As per the authorities, the rating applies to all the pickup variants on sale in Australia and New Zealand.

Here is a glimpse of the 2021 D-Max scorecard by ANCAP -

• Adult Occupant Protection - 83%
• Child Occupant Protection - 89%
• Vulnerable Road User Protection - 69%
• Safety Assist Score - 81%

During the front offset impact test, the 2021 D-Max passenger compartment remained stable. For the driver's upper leg and chest, protection was rated marginal; it was adequate for the lower leg. The passenger's chest and lower legs protection were rated adequate. For other critical body regions, the rating was good.

In the full-width front-impact test, the protection of the rear passenger's chest was rated marginal. However, for driver's and passenger's other critical body parts, the protection was rated good.

The 2021 D-Max scored full points in the oblique pole and side-impact test.

In the far side tests, prevention of excursion was rated marginal in the vehicle to pole impact and adequate in the vehicle to vehicle impact scenario. The pickup's overall side-impact performance was rated adequate by ANCAP.

In the child protection front and side-impact test, the D-Max procured a good rating for all critical body parts. Note six- and ten-year-old child dummies were used for the test.

Coming to vulnerable road user protection, the D-Max bonnet was rated marginal or adequate to protect the pedestrian's head over most of the bonnet surface. The impact protection along the rear of the bonnet, on the other hand, was rated good.

In the Utility category of the ANCAP tests, the 2021 D-Max scores a five-star rating.

• Pelvic protection - Mixed score, mostly good with some adequate ratings
• Front bumper - Good, maximum points for lower leg protection
• Autonomous emergency braking - Adequate in pedestrian test and marginal in cyclist test
• Lane-keeping system - Good
• Emergency lane-keeping system - Adequate

The all-new 2021 Isuzu D-Max made its debut last year in October. The third-gen D-Max made it to the Thai-market soon after its global reveal, as for the Malaysian market, the automaker confirmed it wouldn't be arriving this year.
