2020 Proton X70 CKD - Features that make it a smart car

Proton’s first-ever SUV, the X70 received its first-ever update which makes the already good car even better. Launched recently, the new 2020 Proton X70 CKD has hit the local market by storm and caught its rivals like Toyota Rush, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, off-guard. Available at a starting price of RM 94,800, the new X70 in its latest avatar has 4 variants - Standard 2WD, Executive 2WD, Premium 2WD, and Premium X 2WD.

Proton has added numerous new features in the 2020 X70. Perhaps, the biggest change is the replacement of the old 6-speed AT with the new 7-speed DCT which promises to deliver lightning-quick gear shifts, enhanced performance, and improved fuel efficiency, with the same 1.8-litre engine which churns out 184 PS of max power at 5500 rpm and an increased 300 Nm of peak torque at 1750-4000 rpm.

Out of all the new features, the following are some which make the new X70 a smart car. 

Advanced driver assistance

2020 Proton X70 CKD has attained a perfect 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating which means it must have reliable safety aids. Some of its basic safety features are-

• 6 airbags
• ABS with EBD
• Brake assist
• Auto brake hold
• Electronic stability control
• Traction control system
• Hill hold assist
• Hill descent control, etc

However, what makes the new X70 safer than before is the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance. It is kind of an active safety package that enhances the car’s overall safety quotient and make it smarter. This package includes-

• Autonomous Emergency Braking
• Forward Collision Warning
• Adaptive Cruise Control
• Lane Departure Warning
• Blindspot Information System
• Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
• Door Opening Warning System

Apart from all that, the 2020 X70 also features a 360-degree camera along with front and reverse parking sensors. So you have a clear view of what’s around your car. Keep in mind that active safety features like AEB and FCW are not a substitute for safe and attentive driving. Such features are there to only assist the driver who should remain responsible for safe vehicle operation at all times.

Voice Recognition

These days, people need full connectivity all the time. To ensure such needs are met, Proton has added a voice recognition feature in the new X70 CKD. It is similar to what we have in our smartphones these days (Google Assistance, Siri), but of course, not that extensive and in-depth. In the X70, you can use the voice recognition feature to control features like windows, AC, navigation, etc. You need to say ‘Hi Proton’ followed by the command. It might sound a bit gimmicky but if we have voice recognition in our laptops and smartphones, then why not in our cars?

Other connectivity features available in the X70 are-

• Bluetooth
• 4G and WiFi
• Android smartphones via Smart Link

All of this can be accessed via the gorgeous 8-inch touchscreen monitor that sits in the middle of the uncluttered dashboard.

Remote Control

Just like you can control certain functions via your voice, Proton has built a dedicated smartphone app that allows you to control numerous other functions remotely. For example, you can use the app to open the boot of your X70, close the windows, or perhaps, switch on/off the lights. This app also shows you a plethora of information about your X70, like average fuel consumption, average speed, remaining fuel, electronic parking brake status, etc.

The aforementioned three were the primary smart features of the 2020 Proton X70 CKD. There are a few others which you can find in the X70 specs sheet. They are as follows-

• Power tailgate with a foot sensor
