2020 Hyundai Sonata to showcase four-door coupe styling
KUALA LUMPUR: Last year, Hyundai unveiled the Le Fil Rouge concept, which was an indication of a new design direction for the brand’s future models. Now, the next-generation Sonata will take design cues from the concept, which is confirmed by the Head of the Hyundai Global Design Centre, Mr. SangYup Lee. He has also mentioned that the company wants the vehicle to create the same buzz as the sixth-gen Hyundai Sonata.
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is expected to be showcased at the NYIAS (New York International Auto Show) starting this April. Lee has also told that bringing the coupe is quite challenging for the manufacturer at this moment as the SUVs have taken a major portion in the market.
Instead of featuring a traditional boxy design, the new Sonata will arrive with the four-door coupe look. The car will feature a low roof profile along with the Le Fil Rouge concept’s progressive design. The next-gen Hyundai Sonata will have a different look at the front than the other Hyundai cars. As mentioned by Lee, the difference will be so significant that people will have to take another look to distinguish it as a Hyundai model. However, it will feature some of the current designing cues including the Cascading Grille and the composite lens in the headlights.
Mr SangYup Lee said that the 2020 Hyundai Sonata will share the same usability features inside as the previous models. According to his statement, this time, the carmaker is ready to amaze people by ditching the ‘Russian doll’ design, given to the current models. Also, the manufacturer is trying to put on more desirability and emotion in the designing.
Speaking about its powertrains, the next-gen Sonata will get a 2.0-litre turbo-four and a 2.4-litre I-4 engine from the current lineup. However, the carmaker might drop the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine. Transmission options are expected to be the eight-speed and seven-speed dual-clutch.
