2019 Tokyo Motor Show: Mazda’s first EV, MX-30 debuts
KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda’s first electric car, MX-30 has made its global debut at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show. It gets an appealing design specifically for its side doors. The Mazda EV comes with rear-hinged ‘freestyle’ doors, which means the rear doors can be opened from the back. Also, the centre pillar is omitted that results in providing a large entrance, when two doors on the same side are opened.
Mazda MX-30 comes with an e-SkyActiv powertrain containing an electric motor and a 35.5 kWh battery. It can make a maximum power of 141 hp along with a peak torque of 264 Nm. The Mazda EV comes with e-GVC Plus, which is the brand’s own G-Vectoring Control system.
On the other hand, the 35.5 kWh battery can offer a driving range of 209 km. It supports both DC and AC charging, while the former can be done via CCS connection, the later one accepts input from 6.6 kW through a Type-2 connection. With a 50-kW input, 80% of the battery can be refilled in just 30 to 40 minutes.
Coming to the design, Mazda MX-30 has a recessed front grille. The vertical bar on the lower apron divides the intakes into two. Also, the slim fog lamps are present on the corners. A low and long bonnet is available at the front. There is a dual-tone paint job along with an off-coloured trim. The EV rides on 18-inch wheels along with black body cladding. There are circular taillights at the rear. Apart from the reverse cameras and reflectors, there are no such notable features at the lower side of the back.
Inside the cabin, MX-30 specs feature a floating centre console. A Commander Control interface is also present for the Mazda Connect infotainment system. There is also a seven-inch touchscreen display that controls the climate of the EV.
The Mazda MX-30 is likely to hit the shores of the United Kingdom in 2021.
