2019 Tokyo Motor Show: Daihatsu previews upcoming compact SUV
KUALA LUMPUR: The Japanese vehicle manufacturer, Daihatsu Motor, has displayed its upcoming compact SUV at this year’s ongoing Tokyo Motor Show. It might be an early look at the five-seater Perodua D55L B-segment SUV, which is the much-rumoured B-segment cousin to the Aruz. However, there is no such name mentioned in the information board present on the site. Still, according to the reports, the model will be named “Rocky” and will ride on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. In addition, there is a vital list of information revealed regarding the powertrain and the vehicle’s dimensions.
The 980-kg Daihatsu SUV has a wheelbase of 2,525 mm and measures 1,695 mm tall, 3,995 mm long, and 1,620 mm wide, which makes it larger compared to the current Myvi. Moving to the design, it features a large, hexagonal-shaped grille, flanked by angular headlamps. The headlamp units are combined with triangular fog lamp enclosures and “eyebrow-style” DRLs. A vertical LED strip and front parking sensors are incorporated in the triangular cabinets.
The side profile of the car is enhanced by the black body cladding around the 17 inches wheels, while the tailgate spoiler intensifies the rear profile. The rear end of the car also flaunts slim tail lamps that get connected by a black trim piece, which runs across the tailgate. Just above the tailgate release button, you can find the Daihatsu badge.
The new Daihatsu SUV is powered by a 996-cc turbocharged and intercooler three-cylinder petrol mill, which is capable of churning out a maximum power of 98 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 140 Nm from 2,400 to 4,000 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via a CVT gearbox. Even if the car looks promising, the carmaker has not confirmed yet if it would be turned into a production model.
