2019 Thailand Motor Expo: 2020 Mazda 2 launched
KUALA LUMPUR: The 36th Thailand International Motor Expo started today in IMPACT, Park Kret, Thailand. Several national and international brands have already gathered there to showcase their latest models and attract more buyers.
So as Mazda, the Hiroshima-headquartered multinational automaker. It has launched 2020 Mazda 2 with two body styles - hatchback and sedan. Globally, both the version have already arrived in the market. The hatchback was revealed in July this year while the sedan in earlier this November.
Exterior wise, taking inspiration from Mazda 6 facelift, both the versions of the new Mazda 2 facelift come with the same styling changes. The front end gets a thicker chrome grille, and there is no longer cut to be found on the headlamps. The clusters are reshaped and now look sharper than the previous model. However, unlike Mazda 6, the grille insert is given a new mesh design.
At the rear, the number plate is now placed on a body-colored section. There are other changes too. The taillight graphics are new, and the sedan is given a more expressive bumper design, which moreover sports a chrome strip at the top of the mesh insert.
The new Mazda 2 facelift will be available with two powertrain options in the Thai market. There will be a 1.3-litre SkyActiv-G naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol, which pushes out a maximum power of 93 PS and a peak torque of 123 Nm.
Another option is a 1.5-litre SkyActiv-D turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, which churns out 105 PS of maximum power and 250 Nm of torque. Both of the options come paired with a six-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission, and the power goes to the front wheels.
Mazda 2 meets the country’s Eco Car Phase 2 framework, and this is the reason the petrol engine ensures a fuel consumption of 23.3 kmpl. The diesel option offers a rated consumption of 26.3 kmpl.
Both the body styles will be available with five variants - 1.3 E, 1.3 C, 1.3 S, 1.3 S Leather, and 1.3 SP along with two diesel (XD and XDL) and one petrol option. Notably, the hatchback comes with a “Sports” tag for each variant.
The new Mazda 2 facelift has a starting price of 546,000 baht (approx. RM 75,366) for the 1.3 E variant, and the range-topping 1.3 SP petrol variant comes with a price tag of 690,000 baht (approx. RM 95,203).
