Year-end wrap-up: Looking back at 2024 cars

Let us start from the very beginning and slowly move towards the end ….Here we’ll be covering all the car launches of 2024 and revisit the memory lanes.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton AT Premium (upgraded version)

• Launch date: Jan 22nd
• Price: RM 135,900

The first car to arrive in 2024 was the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton AT Premium. On 22 January, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) introduced this amazing vehicle, which featured several aesthetic improvements, including a White Diamond paint finish, sports bar, door visors, and black cladding around the wheel arches. It retails for RM 135,900 on the road without insurance.

2024 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II

• Launch date: Jan 26th
• Price: RM 2.5 million - RM 2.6 million

On 26th January the 8th-generation Rolls Royce Phantom Series II arrived in Malaysia, in two versions - standard-wheelbase and extended-wheelbase version. The former retails for RM 2.5 million and later for RM 2.9 million. Highlights include - 44 colour options, a 6.5L twin-turbo engine, Rolls-Royce Connected, and more.

2024 Mercedes-Benz C350 e

• Launch date: Feb 23rd
• Price: RM 355k est

The C350e AMG line was introduced to the 5th-gen C-Class range earlier this year, joining the existing C200 Avantgarde and replacing the C300 ANG Line. Assembled locally in Pekan, Pahang, it retails for EM 355,000 and is powered by a 2.0L turbo engine and an electric motor. The car comes equipped with the AMG Line package, the Night Package, and a self-leveling air suspension.

Chery Omoda E5 EV

• Launch date: March 6th
• Price: RM 146,800

The electric sibling to the Omoda 5 SUV, the Omoda E5 arrived by the end of the first quarter of 2024 with its local assembly starting in Q2 2024. Offered in one variant option, it is powered by a front e-motor that is powered by a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. It comes with one-pedal driving support, a pocket brake, ADAS 2.5, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and more. The car has even passed the ‘water wading test’ and ‘bottom scrapping test’.

2024 Maserati GranTurismo

• Launch date: March 19th
• Price: Starts from RM 738,000 (before local duties and taxes)

The 2nd-gen Maserati GranTurismo is offered in two variants - the base Modena and Trofeo. Both are powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo engine (similar to the one in the MC20) which makes 496PS/600Nm in the base and 557PS/650Nm in the high-end model. The car packs a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch unit for infotainment, an 8.8-inch for climate controls, a head-up display, and a small digital clock.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS FL

• Launch date: April 3rd
• Price: Starts from RM 999,888

The GLS FL is offered in two variants - the GLS 450 4Matic and the Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. The entry-level model packs a 3.0L turbo engine and a 48V mild hybrid system. It propels from 0-100 kmph in 6.1 seconds with a top speed limited to 250 kmph. It packs the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment System with a pair of 11.6-inch touchscreens, Parking Package, Rear Comfort Package Plus, Energising Air Control, and the Air Balance Package. The Maybach 600 4Matic retails for RM 1,918,888 and is powered by a 4.0-litre biturbo unit. It is equipped with a Manufaktur Exclusive leather package, Executive seats with leg rests feature, temperature-controlled cupholders and a refrigerated compartment, and an acoustic Comfort sound insulation package.

2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance

• Launch date: April 3rd
• Price: RM 2,238,888

Introduced in the 2024 Dream Cars collection, the AMG S 63 E Performance is the most powerful S-Class of all time. It is powered by a hybrid powertrain making a total of 802 PS and 1,430 Nm; goes from 0-100 kmph in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 290 kmph. It packs an optional AMG Driver’s Package, a fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system, an AMG high-performance battery, MG Ride Control+ air suspension, AMG Active Ride Control roll stabilization, and active rear-axle steering.

2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63S E Performance F1 Edition

• Launch date: April 3rd
• Price: RM 2,118,888

This special edition car celebrates the close association of AMG and Mercedes-Benz’s factory Formula 1 team. It features a non-metallic Manufaktur Alpine Grey paint finish with the AMG logo and grey-to-black gradient along the sides. It packs the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre Package II, AMG Aerodynamics Package, AMG Night Package Exterior and AMG Night Package II, and the AMG Dynamic Plus Package with active engine mounts. Powering it is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo mill making 639 PS and 900 Nm.

GWM Ora 07

• Launch date: April 3rd
• Price: Starts from RM 169,800

Available in two variants, Long Range and Performance, the GMW Ora 07 is the brand's flagship EV that competes with the likes of the BYD Seal and Tesla Model 3. The Long Range model is powered by a single front motor making 204 PS and 340 Nm (0-100kmph in 7.9sec & 170kmph top speed), while the Performance trim gets as additional second motor that pumps a total output of 408 PS and 680 Nm. The GWM EV comes equipped with a panoramic glass roof, a 12.3-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a Qi wireless charging slot, a Super I Space function.

2024 GAC GS3 Emzoom

• Launch date: April 18th
• Price: Starts at RM 118,900

GAC’s B-segment SUV is offered in two variants - Exclusive and Premium-R, both locally assembled in Kuala Lumpur. Here it competes with the likes of Proton X50, Chery Omoda 5, and Honda HR-V. It is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo engine making 177 PS and 270 Nm. Its specs sheet packs s a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android mobile phone mirroring, surround-view camera suite, and an electric parking brake with auto hold.

2024 Peugeot 408

• Launch date: April 29th
• Price: Starts at RM 146,055

The Peugeot 408 is available in three variants - Allure, Premium, and GT. All three models are powered by PureTech 1.6 liter turbocharged engine making 218 PS and 300 Nm of torque. The car gets automatic matrix LED headlamps, 3D ‘claw effect’ LED tail lamps, a driver seat with memory and a massage function, a 10-inch i-Cockpit digital display, a 10-inch i-Cockpit HD colour touchscreen unit, a 10-speaker Focal Premium system, and a wireless phone charger.

2024 BMW iX1 eDrive20 M Sport

• Launch date: April 30th
• Price: RM 264,000

The new BMW iX1 base variant, the eDrive20 M Sport, is RM 26k cheaper than the iX1 xDrive30 M Sport. It is powered by a single, front-mounted e-motor making 204 PS and 250 Nm. This is good from a century sprint time of 8.6 sec and 170 kmph of top speed. It is equipped with an M Sport styling package, an M high-gloss Shadowline package, and an M roof rails high-gloss Shadowline. It also gets, two-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, IconicSounds Electric, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

2024 Kia EV9

• Launch date: May 3rd
• Price: RM 374,668

The 2024 Kia EV9 is available in two variants in the country, GT-Line AWD 7-seater and GT-Line AWD 6-seater. Both are powered by a dual-moto, all-drive setup making 385 PS and 700 Nm. These figures are good for completing the century sprint in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 200 kmph. The car packs, rain-sensing wipers, all-around parking sensors, a sunroof, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, selectable drive modes, a head-up display, three-zone climate control ), and a 14-speaker Meridian sound system.

2024 BYD Atto 3

• Launch date: May 3rd
• Price: RM 150,430

This year BYD updated the Atto 3. The company dropped the Extended Range guise and is now only offering the EV sole, Standard Range. Power is still generated by a front-mounted e-motor (204PS/310Nm) which is good enough to take the car from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.9 seconds. The car is equipped with a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen, a multi-colour ambient lighting system, and a wireless charging pad.

2024 Aston Martin Vantage

• Launch date: May 10th
• Price: RM 2.37 million (before options)

Aston Martin introduced the revised Vantage in Malaysia in 2024 with updated styling and technical specifications. It is powered by a 4.0L biturbo engine making 665PS and 800Nm which is good to touch the 100 kmph mark in 3.4 seconds and attain a top speed of 325 kmph. Its specs sheet includes 10.25-inch infotainment, switches for transmission & drive mode selection, chassis, ESP, lane assist, exhaust mode, parking sensors, lane assist, and air-conditioning, wireless Apple CarPlay, a 390-watt, 11-speaker Aston Martin system.

2024 Isuzu D-Max facelift

• Launch date: May 14th
• Price: RM 98,949.20 to RM 157,938.40

The facelifted D-Max is offered in five variants - Single Cab, Standard, Auto Plus, Premium, and X-Terrain. The vehicle is offered in two engine options - 190PS/450Nm 3.0L and 150PS/350Nm 1.9L. For 2024, these powertrains are Euro 4 emissions standard with a diesel particulate filter. Also new is a ‘Rough Terrain Mode’, an e-Lumax multi-info display, a larger 10-inch touchscreen head unit with wireless Android Auto and CarPlay, a new-generation stereo camera setup, and more.

2024 Honda City Hatchback facelift

• Launch date: May 16th
• Price: RM 85,900 to RM 112,900

The 2024 City hatch is offered in five variant options - S, E, V, RS, and e: HEV RS hybrid. The petrol variants are powered by a 1.5-litre NA engine making 121 PS and 145 Nm, while the e: HEV is equipped with an Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid system with an e-motor juiced by a lithium-ion battery.

2024 Volkswagen Golf R CKD

• Launch date: May 20th
• Price: RM 334,012

Volkswagen Malaysia introduced the new Golf R in the country this year. Offered as a CKD version, the car comes with a R Performance package as standard. It is powered by a 2.0L turbo engine offering 320 PS and 400 Nm. Its standard kit includes a sports suspension, LED lighting units, a 10-inch Discover Pro system, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

BMW i5 M60

• Launch date: May 21st
• Price: RM 480,000

The M60 is powered by a front and rear electric motor, together the two make 517 PS and 795 Nm of torque. The car comes standard with the top-dog Adaptive M Suspension Professional, rear-wheel steering, M Sport body kit, M Sport Pro package, and Live Cockpit Professional.

2024 BMW 520i

• Launch date: May 21st
• Price: RM 340,000 est

This year we got the battery-electric sibling of the G60 5 Series, the BMW 520i. It features a 2.0L turbo mill generating 208hp and 330 Nm of torque. The setup allows the car to go fro 0 to 100 kmph in just 7.5 seconds and attain a top speed of 230 kmph. Its specs sheet includes s a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, Driving Assistant Plus, and M Sport kit.

2024 Proton X50 RC

Launch date: June 4th
Price: RM 86,300 to RM 113,300

Proton introduced the updated B-segment SUV in 2024. It is offered in four variant options called, Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship.It is powered by a 1.5L turbo engine making 150 PS and 226 Nm; in the Flagship the unit makes 177 PS and 255 Nm.

2024 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro SUV

• Launch date: June 21st
• Price: RM 123,800

In 2024, Chery launched is most anticipated car, the Tiggo 7 Pro in Malaysia. The car competes with the likes of Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross and is powered by a 1.6L turbo engine producing 197PS and 290 Nm. It packs several safety gears along with several comforting features like dual-zone climate control, a 50W wireless charger, keyless entry with walk-away auto lock, push-button start, 360-degree camera, a six-way driver and four-way passenger powered seats, and more.

Q3 2024

Smart #3 EV

• Launch date: July 10th
• Price: From RM 175,000

The smart #3 finally arrived in Malaysia this year. Available in three variants- Pro, Premium, ad Brabus, the EV us more aerodynamic and slippery compared to #1. The Pro and Premium are powered by a rear-mounted e-motor, while the range-topping Brabus gets an additional front motor. The car comes with eight years or 200,000 km battery warranty and four years unlimited warranty for the vehicle.

Jaecoo J7

• Launch date: July 19th
• Price: From 138,800

The J7 SUV is offered in two variants - the J7 2WD and J7 AWD. The car is powered by a 1.6L petrol engine making 194 hp and 290 Nm. It has seven driving modes, climatised front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a head-up display.

2024 Suzuki Jimny 5-Door

• Launch date: July 30th
• Price: RM 199,950

This year Suzuki surprised everyone with the launch of the new Jimny 5-Door. It is essentially the same car as the 2-Door version, just longer and wit two more doors.

2025 Proton X70 facelift

• Launch date: August 15
• Price: From RM 98,800

Proton launched the facelifted X70 this year and the SUV is offered in four variants - Standard, Executive, Premium and Premium X. The C-segment SUV features a revised exterior updated cabin, ADAS, and 1.5l TURBO engine.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

• Launch date: September 6
• Price: From RM 185,888

The 4th-gen Santa Fe arrived this year in the country in three CKD variants - the 1.6L Turbo Hybrid Plus, the 2.2L Turbo Diesel Max, and the 1.6L Turbo Hybrid Max. It for the first time the car gets a Terrain Mode selector which is a control knob for Eco, Sport, Comfort, and Smart drive modes. Also present is a HTRAC AWD system.

2024 Mitsubishi Xpander facelift

• Launch date: September 19
• Price: From RM 99,980

This year Mitsubishi launched the all-new Xpander in two variant options - the Xpander and the Xpander Plus. While the car showcases a revised exterior and interior, it runs on the familiar 1.5L NA engine.

2024 Subaru Outback

• Launch date: September 20th
• Price: From 280k

The 6th-gen Subaru Outback finally arrived in 2024, it is available in two variants called the 2.4 XT Touring EyeSight and the Outback 2.5i-T EyeSight. The updated features a new design language and a cabin enjoys several newbies including - an 11.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system., powered front seats, and more.

2024 Volvo EX30

• Launch date: September 25
• Price: From RM 188,888

This year the smallest Volvo EV, the EX30. Offered in three variant options, Plus, Ultra, and Ultra Twin Performance. Every purchase is accompanied by a five-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and eight years or 160,000 km battery warranty. Owners also get a complimentary five-year Volvo Service Plan.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton

• Launch date: October 16th
• Price: From RM 101,980

The all-new Triton is offered in five trim options namely, Triton Single Cab, Triton MT, Triton AT GL, Triton AT Premium, and Triton Athlete. Powertrain options include the new Hyperpower 4N16 2.4 litre turbodiesel engine paired with an automatic transmission. The pickup enjoys updated exterior, features, and safety specs.

Toyota Camry

• Launch date: December 4th
• Price: RM 248,800

The 9th gen D-segment Camry is offered in a sole trim option, the 2.5 HEV. Imported from Thailand, it is powered by a 2.5 litre Dynamic Force A25A-FXS four-cylinder engine along with A permanent magnet synchronous motor juiced by a lithium-ion battery.

2025 Toyota Corolla Cross

• Launch date: December 4th
• Price: From RM 133,800 to RM 148,800

The Corolla Cross is offered in three trim options - 1.8V, 1.8 HEV, and 1.8 HEV GR Sport. The updated model sports a new exterior and interior feature kit which includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, and more.

2025 Proton eMas 7 EV

• Launch date: December 4th
• Price: From RM 109,800

The FIRST Proton EV is offered in two trim options - Prime and Premium; both feature a front-mounted e-motor making 218 PS and 320 Nm of torque. Proton even had a special discount for first 3000 costumes.

Bottom line

The year 2024 was pretty exciting with several major launches including both electric and ICE options. Also, we saw many arrivals from premium automakers, especially the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW. It was also the year when national automaker, Proton launched its very first EV. After all this, our hopes are high for 2025.
