After introducing Chery Eastar to the Malaysian market in the year 2006, the Chinese manufacturer has managed to gain a good hold on the Malaysian roads. The 7-seater MPV is one of the most commonly seen family vehicles in the country, thanks to its spacious interiors and compact MPV structure. Currently, there are two variants of the Eastar in the Malaysian market - Chery Eastar and Chery Eastar ST.

The Eastar comes packed with a 1,971cc 4-cylinder engine and is capable of generating maximum power of 134 hp at 5750 rpm along with a peak torque of 180 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The engine is teamed up with a 4-speed automatic transmission gearbox. The Chery Eastar, which costs around RM81,500, delivers an average mileage of a little over 14 per litre.

Although you will be compromising on the horsepower if you go for Alza instead of the Eastar, it all depends on your combination of factors. All the variants of Perodua Alza run on a 3SZ-VE 4-cylinder engine, which is capable of generating a maximum power of 104 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 136 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The average mileage offered by the Alza is 12.8 km per liter.

3) Proton Ertiga

 

The Proton Ertiga is another great alternative to the Eastar. Although it lags behind due to a less powerful engine, this 6-seater vehicle which comes at a far more affordable price has all the makings of an economical family vehicle. The top variant of the Ertiga will cost you around RM65,705.  Powered by a 1.4-litre engine, it delivers 91 hp of maximum power and  130 Nm of peak torque. Both the figures are lower than the Eastar in comparison. But, for those looking for a really affordable family vehicle, Proton Ertiga is really a great alternative.
